Three Keys to Matching on the First Try in Dentistry Postgraduate Programs

The specialty I want is highly competitive. How can I increase my chances of matching on the first try?

The top three things we see that truly set you apart during the selection process are:

First: Published research in the same specialty you’re applying to. Having scientific research reflects your passion, proves you're ready to contribute academically, and sets you apart with research skills that any graduate program will value after acceptance.

Second: Actual training or exposure in the same field. This means not just theoretical interest, but hands-on practice, involvement, or even shadowing, something that shows you truly understand the specialty and its reality.

Third: Continuous engagement with recent developments in the field (recent evidence). This is something you usually can’t access effectively unless you’re actively involved in research, not just quick reading or relying on textbooks.

And keep in mind, these things take months of preparation. Nothing happens at the last minute.

We’ve noticed those who successfully match (after God’s will) took consistent steps.

We never recommend starting just a month or two before applying, as some people do. Even if you’re shortlisted, remember there’s an interview afterward.

Start preparing well in advance.

There are no shortcuts.

Good training, thorough reading, and meaningful participation in scientific research all require time and effort.

We ask God to grant everyone success, ease, and guidance.
